My garden club is going to plant 8 containers on our city 'square'. We plan on using an ornamental grass as the center plant with creeping rosemary around the edges and some annuals for color mixed in. The containers are about 2 1/2 ft tall. Which of the ornamentals would be short enough to not overwhelm this container? Thanks, Barbara

Hello Barbara,
You don’t mention how wide the containers are for planting. But, you might consider keeping the height range of grass in the 2 to 3 foot range (spread about the same). Being in Georgia, warm season grasses would be better. The Hameln, Strawberries and Cream (variegated), and Karley Rose are beautiful grasses with the Hameln being some shorter than the other 2. Also, your group might look at the lemon thyme rather than the creeping rosemary. Creeping rosemary often grows upwards of 2 feet. I have it in my garden and it is roughly, 3 feet tall. The thyme is beautiful and will grow over the sides of the containers as well.
On watering, the grass will need water over its first year planted to establish (though they don’t like wet feet). The thyme doesn’t like water, so it may be a difficult chore to water the grasses and try to keep a lot of the moisture away from the thyme plants (they prefer sandy, well drained soil and don’t need much moisture).
I hope this gives you some ideas to build on. Thank you for your inquiry.
